VI. The Holy Spirit of the Bible

- Pneuma / πνεûμα
- Pronunciation: pnyoo'-mah; noun
- Description: Denotes the wind, the breath, and the
spirit which is like the wind, invisible, immaterial and
powerful.
- Definition: A current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or
a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the
rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental
disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine)
God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit.

1. Names of the Holy Spirit:

Generally, the article “the” is present where the Subject is the
Personality of the Holy Spirit, where He is spoken of in distinction
from the Father and the Son.

2. Who the Spirit is:
- A. The Holy Spirit is God:
- Ananias lies to God the Holy Spirit [Acts 5:3-4];
- Given the title “Lord”—a title of God/Owner [2 Cor. 3:17:18;
Acts 28:25-27 with Isaiah 6:8-10].
- Has the incommunicable attributes of God: He is eternal
[Heb. 9:14]; He is omnipresent [Ps. 139:7; He is omniscient [1
Cor. 2:10-11; Isa. 40:13]
- Involved in the Works of God: He was there in the creation
of the world and us [Gen1:2; Ps. 104:30; Job 33:4]; He was
involved in Christ’s incarnation [Matt. 1:18, 20; Luke 1:35] ;
He was involved in Christ’s death [Heb. 9:14]; He was involved
in Christ’s resurrection [Rom. 1:4: 8:11]; He is involved in our
salvation [Rom. 8:1-27; Titus 3:5].
- B. The Holy Spirit is also a Person:
- He is named [Matt.28:19].
- He is a Helper—“another” Helper/Counselor [John 14:16].
- He was sent in Jesus’ name to teach [John 14:26].
- He was expected, and He came; He bore and bears witness to
Jesus [John 15:26-27].
- He was sent by Jesus to convict the world of sin; He
glorifies Jesus; He exhibits humility [John 16:7-15]
- He speaks and hears [Jn. 16:13; Acts 1:16; 8:29; 10:19;
11:12; 13:2; 16:6; 20:23; 21:11; 28:25-27; 1 Thes. 4:1
(foretells future); Heb. 3:7-8]
- He can be lied to [Acts 5:3]
- He makes and is a part of making decisions, judgments [Acts
15:28; 13:2; Acts 15:28]
- He intercedes for us [Rom. 8:26]
- He can be grieved, quenched, outraged and resisted [Isaiah
63:9-10; Acts 7:51; Eph. 4:30; 1 Thes.5:19; Heb. 10:29].
- C. The Holy Spirit is NOT Jesus:
- Jesus is called “Comforter” [John 2:1]
- The Holy Spirit is “another” Comforter [John 14:16].
- The Holy Spirit was sent by Jesus [Jn. 15:26; 16:7]
- He discloses the things of Jesus and glorifies Jesus
[John16:13-14]
- He is distinguished from Jesus as a distinct Person, Himself
[Matt 28:19]
- The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus [Luke 3:22]
- D. The Son and Spirit work together:
- Both are involved in the Resurrection [John 2:19-22 (Jesus);
Romans 8:9-11 (Spirit)].
- Both are involved in raising the dead [John 6:39-40 (Jesus);
Rom. 8:9-11 (Spirit)].
- Both dwell in the believer [2 Cor. 13:5 (Jesus); John 14:16;
1 Cor. 3:16; 1 Cor. 6:19; 2 Tim. 1:14 (Spirit); Col. 1:27
(Jesus); John 7:39 (Spirit)].
- Both sanctify believers [Eph. 5:26 (Jesus); 1 Peter 1:2
(Spirit) 1 Cor. 6:9-11].
- E. The Father is NOT the Holy Spirit:
- The Father sent the Holy Spirit [John 14:16; 15:26; Acts
2:33]
- The Spirit intercedes with the Father [Rom. 8:26-27].
- Father and Holy Spirit are distinguished as two Persons
[Matt 28:19].
- F. The Father and Holy Spirit work together:
- They raised Jesus from the dead. [Gal. 1:1 (the Father);
Rom. 8:11 (Spirit)].
- Both comfort believers [2 Cor. 1:3-4 (the Father); Jn. 14:16
(the Spirit / the Comforter)].
- They both sanctify believers [Jude 1 (the Father); 1 Peter
1:2 (the Spirit)].
- G. The Holy Spirit is represented as part of a Holy
triad throughout Scripture:
- Baptize in name of [Matt. 28:19]

- Jesus’ baptism [Luke 3:21-22]

3. The Work of the Holy Spirit:
- A. God the Son, as a man, lived in the power of God
the Holy Spirit, as an example to us:

- B. God the Holy Spirit honors and bears witness to
God the Son, drawing people to the Son:

[He will defend Christ’s mission, Lordship, unlike evil
spirits.]
- C. God the Holy Spirit convicts the world of its
sin:

- D. God the Holy Spirit grants wisdom, knowledge,
ability, power:
