I. The word “spiritual”
- pneumatikos / πνευματικός
- Pronunciation: pnyoo-mat-ik-os';
- Description: Non-carnal,
i.e. (humanly) ethereal (as opposed to gross), or (demonically)
a spirit (concretely), or (divinely) supernatural, regenerate,
religious. Connotes the idea of invisibility and power. It
is a word not used in the Bible until after Pentecost.
Pertaining to the spirit, spiritual.
A. Used for angelic host [lower than God but higher than man in
natural state]:
- Eph. 6:12
- For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the
darkness of this world, against spiritual [pneumatikos]
wickedness in high places.
B. Used for things having their origin with God and, therefore,
are in harmony with His character:
- Rom. 7:14
- For we know that the law is spiritual [pneumatikos]: but I
am carnal, sold under sin.
C. Spiritual. What the type sets forth, not the type itself, is
indicated. Emphasis upon source:
- 1 Cor. 10:3-4
- And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the
sea; And did all eat the same spiritual [pneumatikos] meat; And
did all drink the same spiritual [pneumatikos] drink: for they
drank of that spiritual [pneumatikos] Rock that followed them:
and that Rock was Christ.
- Rev. 11:8
- And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great
city which is allegorically [pneumatikos] [in a spiritual sense]
called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was crucified.
D. Spiritual. Purposes of God revealed by Holy Spirit. The words
in which that revelation is expressed. Emphasis upon type:
- 1 Cor. 2:13
- Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's
wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing
spiritual things [pneumatikos] with spiritual [pneumatikos].
- Eph. 5:19
- Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual
[pneumatikos] songs, singing and making melody in your heart to
the Lord.
- Col. 3:16
- Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;
teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and
spiritual [pneumatikos] songs, singing with grace in your hearts
to the Lord.

- And so, from the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to
pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge
of his will in all spiritual [pneumatikos] wisdom and
understanding,
- 1 Peter 2:2
- Like newborn babes, long for the pure spiritual[pneumatikos]
milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation.
E. Used for men in Christ who walk in a manner pleasing to God:
- Gal. 6:1
- Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are
spiritual [pneumatikos], restore such an one in the spirit of
meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
- 1 Cor. 2:13,15
- And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but
taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who
possess the Spirit [pneumatikos]. The spiritual man
[pneumatikos] judges all things, but is himself to be judged by
no one.
- 1 Cor. 3:1
- And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual
[pneumatikos], but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
- 1 Cor. 14:37
- If any one thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual
[pneumatikos], he should acknowledge that what I am writing to
you is a command of the Lord.
F. Used for the whole body of Christ, a “spiritual” house:
- 1 Peter 2:5
- Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual
[pneumatikos] house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual
[pneumatikos] sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
G. Used for the blessings that accrue to regenerate men at
present time:
- Rom. 15:27
- It hath pleased them verily; and their debtors they are. For
if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual
things [pneumatikos], their duty is also to minister unto them
in carnal things.
- Romans 1:11
- For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some
spiritual [pneumatikos] gift [guide], to the end ye may be
established.
- 1 Cor. 9:11
- If we have sown spiritual good [pneumatikos] among you, is
it too much if we reap your material benefits?
- Eph. 1:3
- Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who
hath blessed us with all spiritual [pneumatikos ] blessings in
heavenly places in Christ.
H. Used for the activities Godward of regenerate men; also the
appointed activities [spiritual gifts] in the Church:
- 1 Peter 2:5
- Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual
[pneumatikos] house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual
[pneumatikos] sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
- 1 Corinthians 12:1
- Now concerning spiritual gifts [pneumatikos], brethren, I
would not have you ignorant.
- 1 Corinthians 14:1
- Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts
[pneumatikos], but rather that ye may prophesy.
I. Used for the resurrected body:
- 1 Corinthians 15:44
- It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual
[pneumatikos] body. There is a natural body, and there is a
spiritual [pneumatikos] body.
J. Used for all that is produced and maintained by the Spirit of
God:
- 1 Corinthians 15:46
- Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual [pneumatikos],
but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual
[pneumatikos].
- 1 Corinthians 2:14
- The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the Spirit
of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to
understand them because they are spiritually [pneumatikos]
discerned.
