II. The word “gift”
- Charis / Χάρις
- Pronunciation: khar'-ece;
- Description: [root of
charisma--gift] Graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act
(abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual;
especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its
reflection in the life; including gratitude); acceptable,
benefit, favour, gift, grace, gracious, joy, liberality,
pleasure, thank, thanks, worthy of thanks.
- Charisma / Xάρισμα
- Pronunciation:
khar'-is-mah
- Description: A (divine)
gratuity, i.e. deliverance (from danger or passion);
(specifically) a (spiritual) endowment, i.e. (subjectively)
religious qualification, or (objectively) miraculous faculty.
/ A gift of grace; a gift involving grace.
A. A gift freely and graciously given; a favor bestowed:
- Rom. 5:15,16
- But the free gift [charisma] is not like the trespass. For
if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the
grace of God and the free gift [charis] (gratuity/gift) in the
grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the
free gift (bestowment/gift) is not like the effect of that one
man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought
condemnation, but the free gift [charisma] following many
trespasses brings justification.
- Rom. 6:23
- For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift [charisma]
of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- Rom. 11:29
- For the gifts [charisma] and the call of God are irrevocable
B. His endowments upon believers by the operation of the Holy
Spirit in the churches:
- Rom. 1:11,12
- For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some
spiritual gift [charisma] to strengthen you, that is, that we
may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and
mine.
- Rom. 12:6
- Having gifts [charisma] that differ according to the grace
given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our
faith…
- 1 Cor. 1:4-7
- I give thanks to God always for you because of the grace of
God which was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you
were enriched in him with all speech and all knowledge--even as
the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you--so that you are
not lacking in any spiritual gift [charis], as you wait for the
revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 1 Cor. 12:4
- Now there are varieties of gifts [charisma], but the same
Spirit.
- 1 Cor. 12:9
- To another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts
[charisma] of healing by the one Spirit.
- 1 Cor. 12:28
- And God hath set some in the church, first apostles,
secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, then miracles, then gifts
[charisma] of healings, helps, governments, divers kinds of
tongues.
- 1 Cor. 12:30,31
- Have all gifts [charisma] of healings? do all speak with
tongues? do all interpret? But desire earnestly the greater
gifts [charisma]. And moreover a most excellent way show I unto
you.
- 1 Tim. 4:14
- Do not neglect the gift [charisma] you have, which was given
you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their
hands upon you.
- 2 Tim. 1:6
- Hence I remind you to rekindle the gift [charisma] of God
that is within you through the laying on of my hands.
- 1 Peter. 4:10
- As each has received a gift [charisma], employ it for one
another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.
C. Used of the natural gift of continence [self-restraint from
sexual activity], consequent upon the grace of God:
- 1 Cor. 7:7

special gift [charisma] from God, one of one kind and one of
another.
