VII. What and for Whom to Pray

- Matt. 5:44
- But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray [proseuchomai]
for those who persecute you.
- Matt. 9:37-38
- Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful,
but the laborers are few; pray [deomai] therefore the Lord of
the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
- Matt. 24:20
- Pray [proseuchomai] that your flight may not be in winter or
on a sabbath. [Mr. 13:18].
- Mark 9:29
- And he said to them, "This kind [of demon] cannot be driven
out by anything but prayer [proseuche]."
- Luke 6:27-28
- "But I say to you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to
those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray
[proseuchomai] for those who abuse you.
- Luke 10:2
- And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the
laborers are few; pray [deomai] therefore the Lord of the
harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
- Acts 2:21
- And it shall be that whoever calls [epikaleomai] on the name
of the Lord shall be saved.
- Romans 9:3
- For I could wish [euchomai] that I myself were accursed and
cut off from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen by
race.
- Romans 10:1
- Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer [deesis] to God for
them [the Jews] is that they may be saved.
- Romans 10:12-14
- For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same
Lord is Lord of all and bestows his riches upon all who call
upon [epikaleomai] him. For, "every one who calls upon
[epikaleomai] the name of the Lord will be saved." But how are
men to call upon [epikaleomai] him in whom they have not
believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have
never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher?
- 1 Cor. 5:4-5
- In the name of the Lord Jesus on the man who has done such a
thing. When you are assembled, and my spirit is present, with
the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver [in prayer] this
man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit
may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
- 1 Cor. 14:13
- Therefore, he who speaks in a tongue should pray
[proseuchomai] for the power to interpret.
- 2 Cor. 13:7
- But we pray [euchomai] God that you may not do wrong—not
that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do
what is right, though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot
do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. For we
are glad when we are weak and you are strong. What we pray
[euchomai] for is your improvement.
- Eph. 1:16-19
- I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my
prayers [proseuche], that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of
revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your
hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which
he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious
inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable
greatness of his power in us who believe, according to the
working of his great might.
- Phil. 1:9
- And it is my prayer [proseuchomai] that your love may abound
more and more, with knowledge and all discernment.
- Col. 1:9
- And so, from the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to
pray [proseuchomai] for you, asking [aiteo] that you may be
filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom
and understanding.
- 2 Thes. 1:11
- To this end we always pray [proseuchomai] for you, that our
God may make you worthy of his call, and may fulfil every good
resolve and work of faith by his power,
- 2 Thes. 3:1
- Finally, brethren, pray [proseuchomai] for us, that the word
of the Lord may speed on and triumph, as it did among you, and
that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men; for not all
have faith.
- 1 Tim. 2:1-2
- First of all, then, I urge that supplications [deesis],
prayers [proseuche], intercessions [enteuxis], and thanksgivings
be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high
positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly
and respectful in every way.
- Heb. 13:18
- Pray [proseuchomai] for us, for we are sure that we have a
clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things.
- James 5:13-18
- Is any one among you suffering? Let him pray [proseuchomai].
Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise [psallo: praise through
instruments]. Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders
of the church, and let them pray [proseuchomai] over him,
anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer
[euche] of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise
him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
Therefore confess [exomologeo] your sins to one another, and
pray [euchomai] for one another, that you may be healed. The
prayer [deesis] of a righteous man has great power in its
effects. [Lit: the inwrought (by the Spirit) supplication of a
righteous man avails much (greatly prevails).] Elijah was a man
of like nature with ourselves and he prayed fervently
[proseuche] [proseuchomai] [lit. “he prayed with prayer] that it
might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not
rain on the earth. Then he prayed [proseuchomai] again and the
heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth its fruit.
- 3 John 1:2
- Beloved, I pray [euchomai] that all may go well with you and
that you may be in health; I know that it is well with your
soul.
- Col. 4:2-3
- Continue steadfastly in prayer [proseuche], being watchful
in it with thanksgiving [eucharistia]; and pray [proseuchomai]
for us also, that God may open to us a door for the word, to
declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in
prison.
