VIII. General Verses on Prayer

- Matt. 21:13
- He said to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be called a
house of prayer [proseuche]; but you make it a den of robbers."
[Mark 11:17; Luke 19:46]
- Matt. 21:16
- And they said to him, "Do you hear what these are saying?"
And Jesus said to them, "Yes; have you never read, 'Out of the
mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast brought perfect praise
[ainos]'?"
- Matt. 23:14
- Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye
devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer
[proseuchomai]: therefore ye shall receive the greater
damnation. [Mk.12:40; Luke 20:46-47]

- And the whole multitude of the people were praying
[proseuchomai] outside at the hour of incense.
- Luke 5:33
- And they said to him, "The disciples of John fast often and
offer prayers [deesis], and so do the disciples of the

- Repent therefore of this wickedness of yours, and pray
[deomai] to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart
may be forgiven you. For I see that you are in the gall of
bitterness and in the bond of iniquity." And Simon answered,
"Pray [deomai] for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have
said may come upon me."

riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer
[proseuche]; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come
together.

- As we were going to the place of prayer [proseuche], we were
met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought
her owners much gain by soothsaying.

- And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized, and wash away
your sins, calling on [epikaleomai] his name.' "When I [Paul]
had returned to Jerusalem and was praying [proseuchomai] in the
temple, I fell into a trance.

- And Paul said, "Whether short or long, I would [(pray)
euchomai] to God that not only you but also all who hear me this
day might become such as I am--except for these chains."

- And fearing that we might run on the rocks, they let out

- For it is written, "As I live, says the Lord, every knee
shall bow to me, and every tongue shall give praise [exomologeo]

- I appeal to you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by
the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your
prayers [proseuche] to God on my behalf.
- 1 Cor. 11:4-5
- Any man who prays [proseuchomai]or prophesies with his head
covered dishonors his head, but any woman who prays
[proseuchomai] or prophesies with her head unveiled dishonors
her head--it is the same as if her head were shaven.

- Judge for yourselves; is it proper for a woman to pray
[proseuchomai]to God with her head uncovered?
- 2 Cor. 1:11
- You also must help us by prayer [deesis], so that many will
give thanks [eucharisteo] on our behalf for the blessing granted
us in answer to many prayers [implied].

- So shun youthful passions and aim at righteousness, faith,
love, and peace, along with those who call upon [epikaleomai]
the Lord from a pure heart.
- 1 Peter 1:17 (Living)
- And remember that your heavenly Father to whom you pray
[epikaleomai] has no favorites when he judges. He will judge you
with perfect justice for everything you do; so act in reverent
fear of him from now on until you get to heaven.

- And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures
and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each
holding a harp, and with golden bowls full of incense, which are
the prayers [proseuche] of the saints.

censer; and he was given much incense to mingle with the prayers
[proseuche] of all the saints upon the golden altar before the
throne; and the smoke of the incense rose with the prayers
[proseuche] of the saints from the hand of the angel before God.
