I.  The Holy Spirit of the Old Testament

'Elohiym

Pronunciation:  el-o-heem'

Description:  Gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative.

Ruwach

Pronunciation:  roo'-akh

Description:  Wind; by resemblance breath, i.e. a sensible (or even violent) exhalation; figuratively, life, anger, unsubstantiality; by extension, a region of the sky; by resemblance spirit, but only of a rational being (including its expression and functions).

Yhovah

Pronunciation:  yeh-ho-vaw'

Description:  (The) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God.

The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit [ruwach] of God ['elohiym] was moving over the face of the waters.

Gen. 6:3

Then the Lord said, "My spirit [ruwach] shall not abide in man for ever, for he is flesh, but his days shall be a hundred and twenty years."

Gen. 41:38-39

And Pharaoh said to his servants, "Can we find such a man as this, in whom is the Spirit [ruwach] of God ['elohiym] ?" So Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has shown you all this, there is none so discreet and wise as you are.

Ex. 31:2-3

"See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri…and I have filled him with the Spirit [ruwach] of God ['elohiym], with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship,

Num. 11:25

Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit [ruwach] that was upon him and put it upon the seventy elders; and when the Spirit [ruwach] rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did so no more.

Num. 11:29

But Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord's people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Spirit [ruwach] upon them!"

Num. 24:2-3

And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and saw Israel encamping tribe by tribe. And the Spirit [ruwach] of God ['elohiym]?" came upon him, and he took up his discourse, and said…

Num. 27:18

And the Lord said to Moses, "Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit [ruwach], and lay your hand upon him.

Deut. 34:9

And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom [ruwach of wisdom / wisdom spirit / wisdom’s spirit], for Moses had laid his hands upon him; so the people of Israel obeyed him, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Judges 3:9-10

But when the people of Israel cried to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel, who delivered them, Othni-el the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. The Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah] came upon him, and he judged Israel; he went out to war, and the Lord gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.

Judges 6:34

But the Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah] took possession of Gideon; and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him.

Judges 11:29,32

Then the Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah] came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed on to Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed on to the Ammonites… So Jephthah crossed over to the Ammonites to fight against them; and the Lord gave them into his hand.

Judges 13:24-25

And the woman bore a son, and called his name Samson; and the boy grew, and the Lord blessed him. And the Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah] began to stir him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshta-ol.

Judges 14:6

And the Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah] came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion asunder as one tears a kid; and he had nothing in his hand. [others: 14:19; 15:14]

1 Sam. 10:6

Then the Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah] will come mightily upon you [Saul], and you shall prophesy with them and be turned into another man. [other: 1 Sam. 10:10]

1 Sam.11:6

And the Spirit [ruwach] of God ['elohiym] came mightily upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled.He took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, "Whoever does not come out after Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen!" Then the dread of the Lord fell upon the people, and they came out as one man.

1 Sam.16:13

Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah] came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. Now the Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah] departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.

2 Sam. 23:2

The oracle of David, the son of Jesse, the oracle of the man who was raised on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the sweet psalmist of Israel: "The Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah] speaks by me, his word is upon my tongue.”

1 Chron. 12:18

Then the Spirit [ruwach] came upon Amasai, chief of the thirty, and he said, "We are yours, O David; and with you, O son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to your helpers! For your God helps you." Then David received them, and made them officers of his troops.

2 Chron. 15:1-2

The Spirit [ruwach] of God ['elohiym] came upon Azariah the son of Oded, and he went out to meet Asa, and said to him, "Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: The Lord is with you, while you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you. [Others who prophesied, empowered by the Spirit: 14. Jahaziel (2 Chron. 20:14); Zechariah (2 Chron. 24:20).]

Neh. 9:20

Thou gavest thy good Spirit [ruwach] to instruct them, and didst not withhold thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst. Many years thou didst bear with them, and didst warn them by thy Spirit [ruwach] through thy prophets.

Job 33:4

The spirit [ruwach] of God [el: Almighty, deity] has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

Ps. 51:1

Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy [qodesh: sacred, consecrated] Spirit [ruwach] from me.

Ps. 104:29-30

When thou hidest thy face, they are dismayed; when thou takest away their breath, they die and return to their dust When thou sendest forth thy Spirit [ruwach], they are created; and thou renewest the face of the ground.

Ps. 139:7-8

Whither shall I go from thy Spirit [ruwach] ? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend to heaven, thou art there! If I make my bed in Sheol, thou art there!

Ps. 143:10

Teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God! Let thy good spirit [ruwach] lead me on a level path!

Isa. 11:1-2

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. And the Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah] shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. [Others: Isa. 42:1; Isa. 61:1]

Isa. 32:14-17

For the palace shall be forsaken; the populous city shall be deserted; the hill and the watch-tower shall be for dens…until the Spirit [ruwach] be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness become a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be esteemed as a forest. Then justice shall dwell in the wilderness; and righteousness shall abide in the fruitful field. And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness, quietness and confidence for ever. [Others: Isa. 44:3; Ez. 37:14,29]

Isa. 40:13

Who has directed the Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah], or as his counselor has instructed him?

Isa. 48:16-17

Draw near to me, hear this: from the beginning I have not spoken in secret, from the time it came to be I have been there." And now the Lord God has sent me and his Spirit [ruwach]. Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go.

Isa.59:21

"And as for me, this is my covenant with them, says the Lord: my spirit [ruwach] which is upon you, and my words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your children, or out of the mouth of your children's children, says the Lord, from this time forth and for evermore."

Isaiah 63:9-10

In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old. But they rebelled and grieved his holy [qodesh: sacred, consecrated] Spirit [ruwach]; therefore he turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them.

Isa. 63:14

Like cattle that go down into the valley, the Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah] gave them rest. So thou didst lead thy people, to make for thyself a glorious name.

Ez.11:5

Then he remembered the days of old, of Moses his servant. Where is he who brought up out of the sea the shepherds of his flock? Where is he who put in the midst of them his holy [qodesh: sacred, consecrated] Spirit [ruwach].

Ez.2:2

And when he spoke to me, the Spirit [ruwach] entered into me and set me upon my feet; and I heard him speaking to me. [others: Ez. 3:12,14,24; 8:3, etc.]

Joel 2:28-29

"And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit [ruwach] on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even upon the menservants and maidservants in those days, I will pour out my spirit [ruwach]."

Micah 2:7

Should this be said, O house of Jacob? Is the the Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah] impatient? Are these his doings? Do not my words do good to him who walks uprightly?

Micah 3:7-8

The seers shall be disgraced, and the diviners put to shame; they shall all cover their lips, for there is no answer from God. But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit [ruwach] of the Lord [Yhovah], and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin.
