IV. Man’s Love for God

Matt. 6:24
"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love [agapao] the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. [Luke 16:13]
Matt. 10:37
He who loves [phileo] father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves [phileo] son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
Matt. 24:12
And because wickedness is multiplied, most men's love [agape] will grow cold
Mark 12:30-33
And you shall love [agapao] the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this, 'You shall love [agapao] your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." Luke 7:4-5
And when they came to Jesus, they besought him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves [agapao] our nation, and he built us our synagogue." [Assumed love for nation and synagogue due to his love for God.]
Luke 7:41-42
"A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he forgave them both. Now which of them will love [agapao] him more?" [Parable about man’s love for the God who forgives great debt.]
Luke 7:47
Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved [agapao] much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little."
Luke 11:42
"But woe to you Pharisees! for you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love [agape] of God; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
John 5:42
But I know that you have not the love [agape] of God within you.

He said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, " Simon, son of John, do you love [phileo] me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love [phileo] me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love [phileo] you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.
1 Cor. 8:1-3
Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that "all of us possess knowledge." "Knowledge" puffs up, but love [agape] builds up. If any one imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if one loves [agapao] God, one is known by him.
1 Cor. 16:22
If any one has no love [philoteknos] for the Lord, let him be accursed.
2 Cor. 6:4-6
But as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love [agape].
Phil. 1:15-16
Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. The latter do it out of love [agape], knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.
2 Thes. 3:5
May the Lord direct your hearts to the love [agape] of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.
2 Tim. 3:2-5
For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, inhuman, implacable, slanderers, profligates, fierce, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God [philotheos], holding the form of religion but denying the power of it. Avoid such people.
2 Tim. 4:8
Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved [agapao] his appearing.
Titus 2:2
Bid the older men be temperate, serious, sensible, sound in faith, in love [agape] , and in steadfastness.
Philemon 1:4-5
I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, because I hear of your love [agape] and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and all the saints.
1 John 2:5
But whoever keeps his word, in him truly love [agape] for God is perfected. By this we may be sure that we are in him.
