V. Man’s Love for Man

- Matt. 5:43-46
- "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love
[agapao]
your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love
[agapao]
your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so
that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he
makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain
on the just and on the unjust. For if you love
[agapao] those
who love [agapao]
you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax
collectors do the same?
- Matt. 19:19
- Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love
[agapao]
your neighbor as yourself."
- Matt. 24:12
- And because wickedness is multiplied, most men's love
[agape] will grow cold.
- Mark 12:30-33
- And you shall love
[agapao]
the Lord your God with all your
heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with
all your strength.' The second is this, 'You shall love
[agapao]
your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment
greater than these." And the scribe said to him, "You are right,
Teacher; you have truly said that he is one, and there is no
other but he; and to love
[agapao] him with all the heart, and
with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to
love [agapao]
one's neighbor as oneself, is much more than all
whole burnt offerings and sacrifices." [Matt. 22:37-39; Luke
10:27]
- Luke 6:27-35
- "But I say to you that hear, Love
[agapao] your enemies, do
good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for
those who abuse you. To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer
the other also; and from him who takes away your coat do not
withhold even your shirt. Give to every one who begs from you;
and of him who takes away your goods do not ask them again. And
as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. "If you
love [agapao]
those who love you, what credit is that to you?
For even sinners love those who love
[agapao]
them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you?
For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom
you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners
lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love
[agapao]
your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in
return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of
the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish.
- Luke 7:4-5
- And when they came to Jesus, they besought him earnestly,
saying, "He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves
[agapao]
our nation, and he built us our synagogue."
- John 13:34-35
- A new commandment I give to you, that you love
[agapao] one
another; even as I have loved [agapao]
you, that you also love
[agapao]
one another. By this all men will know that you are my
disciples, if you have love
[agapao] for one another."
- John 15:12-13
- This is my commandment, that you love
[agapao] one another
as I have loved [agapao] you. Greater love
[agape] has no man
than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
- John 15:17, 19
- This I command you, to love
[agapao] one another. If you
were of the world, the world would love
[phileo] its own; but
because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the
world, therefore the world hates you.
- John 17:23-24
- I in them and thou in me, that they may become perfectly
one, so that the world may know that thou hast sent me and hast
loved [agapao]
them even as thou hast loved [agapao]
me. Father, I desire that they also, whom thou hast given me, may be with me
where I am, to behold my glory which thou hast given me in thy
love [agapao]
for me before the foundation of the world.
- John 21:15-17
- When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,
"Simon, son of John, do you love
[agapao] me more than these?"
He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love
[phileo] you."
He said to him, "Feed my lambs." A second time he said to him,
"Simon, son of John, do you love
[agapao] me?" He said to him,
"Yes, Lord; you know that I love
[phileo] you." He said to him,
"Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of
John, do you love [phileo]
me?" Peter was grieved because he
said to him the third time, "Do you love
[phileo] me?" And he
said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love
[phileo]
you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.
- Romans 12:9
- Let love [agape]
be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to
what is good; 10. Love [philostorgos] one another with brotherly
affection [philadelphia]; outdo one another in showing honor.
- Romans 13:8-10
- Owe no one anything, except to love
[agapao] one another;
for he who loves [agapao]
his neighbor has fulfilled the law.
The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery, You shall not
kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet," and any other
commandment, are summed up in this sentence, "You shall love
[agapao]
your neighbor as yourself." Love [agape]
does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love
[agape] is the fulfilling of the
law.
- Romans 14:15
- If your brother is being injured by what you eat, you are no
longer walking in love [agapao].
Do not let what you eat cause the ruin of one for whom Christ died.
- Romans 15:30
- I appeal to you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by
the love [agape]
of the Spirit, to strive together with me in
your prayers to God on my behalf.
- 1 Cor. 4: 21
- What do you wish? Shall I come to you with a rod, or with
love [agape]
in a spirit of gentleness?
- 1 Cor. 13:1-8a,13
- If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not
love [agape],
I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I
have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all
knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains,
but have not love [agape],
I am nothing. If I give away all I
have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love
[agape],
I gain nothing. Love [agape]
is patient and kind; love
[agape]
is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude.
Love [agape]
does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable
or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the
right. Love [agape]
bears all things, believes all things, hopes
all things, endures all things. Love
[agape] never ends… So
faith, hope, love [agape]
abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love
[agape].
- 1 Cor. 14:1
- Make love [agape]
your aim, and earnestly desire the
spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.
- 1 Cor. 16:14
- Let all that you do be done in love
[agape].
- 1 Cor. 16:24
- My love [agape]
be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.
- 2 Cor. 2:4
- For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of heart
and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know
the abundant love [agape]
that I have for you.
- 2 Cor. 2:8
- So I beg you to reaffirm your love
[agape] for him [the
offender in the Corinth church].
- 2 Cor. 8:7-8,24
- Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in utterance, in
knowledge, in all earnestness, and in your love
[agape] for
us—see that you excel in this gracious work also. I say this not
as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that
your love [agape]
also is genuine. So give proof, before the churches, of your love
[agape]
and of our boasting about you to these men.
- 2 Cor. 9:7
- Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly
or under compulsion, for God loves
[agapao]
a cheerful giver.
- 2 Cor. 11:11
- And why? Because I do not love
[agapao]
you? God knows I do!
- 2 Cor. 12:15
- I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I
love [agapao]
you the more, am I to be loved
[agapao] the less?
- 2 Cor. 13:11
- Finally, brethren, farewell. Mend your ways, heed my appeal,
agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love
[agape]
and peace will be with you. 14. The grace of the Lord
Jesus Christ and the love
[agape]
of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
- Gal. 5:13
- For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not use
your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love
[agape]
be servants of one another. 14. For the whole law is
fulfilled in one word, "You shall love
[agapao] your neighbor as
yourself."
- Gal. 5:22
- But the fruit of the Spirit is love
[agape], joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23. gentleness,
self-control; against such there is no law.
- Eph. 1:15-16
- For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the
Lord Jesus and your love
[agape] toward all the saints, I do not
cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.
- Eph. 4:2
- With all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing
one another in love [agape].
- Eph. 4:15-16
- Rather, speaking the truth in love
[agape], we are to grow
up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom
the whole body, joined and knit together by every joint with
which it is supplied, when each part is working properly, makes
bodily growth and upbuilds itself in love
[agape].
- Eph. 5:2
- And walk in love
[agape], as Christ loved
[agapao] us and
gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to
God.
- Eph. 5:25
- Husbands, love [agape]
your wives, as Christ loved [agapao]
the church and gave himself up for her. 28. Even so husbands
should love [agapao]
their wives as their own bodies. He who
loves [agapao]
his wife loves [agapao] himself.
- Eph. 5:33
- However, let each one of you love
[agapao] his wife as
himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
- Phil. 1:9
- And it is my prayer that your love
[agape] may abound more
and more, with knowledge and all discernment.
- Phil. 1:15-16
- Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others
from good will. The latter do it out of love
[agape], knowing
that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.
- Phil. 2:1-2
- So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any incentive of
love [agape],
any participation in the Spirit, any affection and
sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the
same love [agape],
being in full accord and of one mind.
- Col. 1:4
- Because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of
the love [agape]
which you have for all the saints.
- Col. 1:7-8
- As you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant.
He is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf and has made
known to us your love
[agape] in the Spirit.
- Col. 2:2
- That their hearts may be encouraged as they are knit
together in love [agape],
to have all the riches of assured
understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, of Christ.
- Col. 3:12-14
- Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved (having
been loved
[agapao])
, compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness,
and patience, forbearing one another and, if one has a complaint
against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven
you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love
[agape],
which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
- Col. 3:19
- Husbands, love
[agapao]
your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
- 1 Thes. 1:3
- Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labor of
love [agape],
and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in
the sight of God and our Father.
- 1 Thes. 3:6
- But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has
brought us the good news of your faith and love
[agape] and
reported that you always remember us kindly and long to see us,
as we long to see you.
- 1 Thes. 3:12
- And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love
[agape]
to one another and to all men, as we do to you.
- 1 Thes. 4:9-10
- But concerning love
[philadelphia]
of the brethren you have no need to have any one write to you, for you yourselves have
been taught by God to love
[agapao]
one another; and indeed you
do love [literally: do it (implied by context: love) toward] all
the brethren throughout Macedonia. But we exhort you, brethren,
to do so more and more,
- 1 Thes. 5:8
- But, since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on
the breastplate of faith and love
[agape], and for a helmet the
hope of salvation.
- 1 Thes. 5:12
- But we beseech you, brethren, to respect those who labor
among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to
esteem them very highly in love
[agape] because of their work.
Be at peace among yourselves.
- 2 Thes. 1:3
- We are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren,
as is fitting, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the
love [agape]
of every one of you for one another is increasing.
- 1 Tim. 1:5
- Whereas the aim of our charge is love
[agape] that issues
from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith.
- 1 Tim. 1:14
- And the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith
and love [agape]
that are in Christ Jesus.
- 1 Tim. 2:15
- But she shall be preserved in childbearing, if they continue
in faith and love [agape]
and holiness with discretion.
- 1 Tim. 3:2
- Now a bishop must be above reproach, the husband of one
wife, temperate, sensible, dignified, hospitable
[philoxenos],
an apt teacher.
- 1 Tim. 4:12
- Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an
example in speech and conduct, in love
[agape], in faith, in
purity.
- 1 Tim. 6:11
- But as for you, man of God, shun all this; aim at
righteousness, godliness, faith, love
[agape], steadfastness,
gentleness.
- 2 Tim. 1:7
- For God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of
power and love [agape]
and self-control.
- 2 Tim. 1:13
- Follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard
from me, in the faith and love
[agape] which are in Christ
Jesus.
- 2 Tim. 2:22
- So shun youthful passions and aim at righteousness, faith,
love [agape],
and peace, along with those who call upon the Lord
from a pure heart.
- 2 Tim. 3:10
- Now you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in
life, my faith, my patience, my love
[agape],
my steadfastness.
- Titus 1:7-8
- For a bishop, as God's steward, must be blameless; he must
not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or
greedy for gain, but hospitable
[philoxenos], a lover of
goodness [philogathos],
master of himself, upright, holy, and self-controlled;
- Titus 2:2
- Bid the older men be temperate, serious, sensible, sound in
faith, in love [agape],
and in steadfastness.
- Titus 2:3-4
- Bid the older women likewise to be reverent in behavior, not
to be slanderers or slaves to drink; they are to teach what is
good, and so train the young women to love
[philandros]
their husbands and children,
- Titus 3:15
- All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who
love [phileo]
us in the faith. Grace be with you all.
- Philemon 1:4-5
- I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers,
because I hear of your love
[agape]
and of the faith which you
have toward the Lord Jesus and all the saints,
- Philemon 1:7
- For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love
[agape],
my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been
refreshed through you.
- Philemon 1:9
- Yet for love's
[agape]
sake I prefer to appeal to you--I,
Paul, an ambassador and now a prisoner also for Christ Jesus.
- Heb. 6:10
- For God is not so unjust as to overlook your work and the
love [agape]
which you showed for his sake in serving the
saints, as you still do.
- Heb. 10:24
- And let us consider how to stir up one another to love
[agape] and good works.
- Heb. 13:1-2
- Let brotherly love
[philadelphia]
continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality
[philoxenia]
to strangers, for thereby some
have entertained angels unawares.
- James 2:8
- If you really fulfil the royal law, according to the
scripture, "You shall love
[agapao]
your neighbor as yourself," you do well.
- 1 Peter 1:22
- Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth
for a sincere love of the brethren
[philadelphia], love
[agapao]
one another earnestly from the heart.
- 1 Peter 4:8-9
- Above all hold unfailing your love
[agape] for one another,
since love [agape]
covers a multitude of sins. Practice hospitality
[philoxenos]
ungrudgingly to one another.
- 1 Peter 5:14
- Greet one another with the kiss of love
[agape]. Peace to
all of you that are in Christ.
- 2 Peter 1:5
- For this very reason make every effort to supplement your
faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with
self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and
steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly
affection [philadelphia]
, and brotherly affection
[philadelphia]
with love [agape].
- 1 John 3:16-17
- By this we know love
[agape],
that he laid down his life for
us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But if
any one has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet
closes his heart against him, how does God's love
[agape] abide
in him?
- 1 John 3:23
- And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the
name of his Son Jesus Christ and love
[agape] one another, just
as he has commanded us.
- 1 John 4:7-12
- Beloved [agape],
let us love [agape]
one another; for love
[agape]
is of God, and he who loves
[agape]
is born of God and knows God. He who does not love
[agape]
does not know God; for God is love
[agape].
In this the love [agape]
of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so
that we might live through him. In this is love
[agape]
, not that we loved
[agapao]
God but that he loved
[agapao] us and
sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins. Beloved
[agape],
if God so loved [agapao]
us, we also ought to love [agapao]
one another. No man has ever seen God; if we love
[agapao] one
another, God abides in us and his love
[agape]
is perfected in us.
- 1 John. 4:16-21
- So we know and believe the love
[agape] God has for us. God
is love
[agape]
, and he who abides in love
[agape] abides in
God, and God abides in him. In this is love
[agape] perfected
with us, that we may have confidence for the day of judgment,
because as he is so are we in this world. There is no fear in love
[agape],
but perfect love [agape]
casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and he who fears is not perfected in love
[agape].
We love [agapao]
, because he first loved
[agapao]
us. If any one says, "I love
[agapao]
God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love
[agapao] his
brother whom he has seen, cannot love
[agapao] God whom he has
not seen. And this commandment we have from him, that he who loves
[agapao]
God should love
[agapao]
his brother also.
- 1 John 5:1-3
- Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child
of God, and every one who loves
[agapao] the parent loves
[agapao]
the child. By this we know that we love
[agapao] the
children of God, when we love
[agapao] God and obey his
commandments. For this is the love
[agape] of God, that we keep
his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
- 2 John 1:1
- The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love
[agapao]
in the truth, and not only I but also all who know the
truth.
- 2 John 1:3
- Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father
and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son, in truth and love
[agape].
- 2 John 1:5-6
- And now I beg you, lady, not as though I were writing you a
new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning,
that we love
[agapao]
one another. And this is love, that we
follow his commandments; this is the commandment, as you have
heard from the beginning, that you follow love
[agape].
- 3 John 1:1
- The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love
[agapao]
in the truth.
- 3 John 1:5-6
- Beloved, it is a loyal thing you do when you render any
service to the brethren, especially to strangers, who have
testified to your love
[agape]
before the church. You will do
well to send them on their journey as befits God's service.
- Jude 1:12
- These are blemishes on your love feasts
[agape], as they
boldly carouse together, looking after themselves; waterless
clouds, carried along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn,
twice dead, uprooted.
- Jude 1:21
- Keep yourselves in the love
[agape] of God; wait for the
mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
- Rev. 2:19
- I know your works, your love
[agape] and faith and service
and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the
first.
